George is in a 6 gallon tank. I usually do 50% water changes every 7 to 10 days. Today I put him in a small container next to Barracuda's tank while I did a 100% change. Before the change, I was noticing how nicely his tail was growing back--all the jagged edges were replaced with clear smooth new growth. Just now I noticed that his tail is totally shredded and looks worse than when I first got him. Could he have stressed out and bitten it himself? I have a silk plant and a large cave in the tanks with him, with no gravel. There is already aquarium salt in the tank.

Did you notice it was worse only after you did the water change? If so i would say it is a definite possibility that he bit his tail b/c of his new company. Or are you sure it's not fin rot? Is it just shredded or are their colored edges?

Tail just looks shredded now--no discoloration etc. I changed the water around 1:00 and I noticed the shredded tail around 5:00. Change in tail was definitely AFTER water change. No filter. Just silk plants and his cave. He's been in that tank since the day I got him. I only moved him out for the first time today. I thought a 100% water change would be good for him.

Barracuda is in a Aquaview with just the tiny hole in the cover. George was in a 2 cup bowl with a lid on it sitting next to Barracuda only while I changed the water.

:( :(

It sounds like to me that he bit his tail. I have a tail biter too, and I have been adding salt to his tank for over a month now. He is getting better, so just be patient... Goodluck!

Barracuda is the name of my other betta. George flares at everything, Barracuda never flares. I wanted to see if Barracuda would flare at another Betta, and I had to set the cup somewhere.
