I removed the male from the breeding tank last week as he was hassling the female to breed again but she wouldnt as they still have fry.

Two days ago, I removed her from the fry as she seemed to be turning on them and re-introduced her to the male in another tank. They seemed to be getting on fine, going thru the motions of breeding again, Ive just checked the tank and she couldnt swin straight, her swin bladder had gone, her scales were missing and her fins torn to shreds :-( I took the only humane action and euthanised her, she was barely breathing.

Im totally gutted, they were fine this morning no aggression at all, dont know why he's done this.

No more fry after this batch then.

Its been a long time since a fish has brought me to tears, but this was horrible to see.

RIP my beautiful lady Aureus. :-(

oh no, very sorry to hear that.

i would be well gutted, all them lovely piccys you have of them both and the fry.

do you feel any bad feeling towards the male now? i think i would!!

Thanks guys, I cant understand why, the pic in my avatar was taken a couple of hours after re-introducing them, they were doing their little courtship dance, this morning they were both inside their coconut which is what they have used in the past to spawn, I figured by tonight there would be eggs again and for some bizarre reason he's obviously turned on her. She looked awful, Ive seen cichlids do some nasty things, but this was horrendous.

Thats sucks Minxy...atleast you got the fry and can grow yourself a new pair i suppose.

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe you could find another breeding pair, or pair the lone one up. :rip:

I dont think the loss of it been a breeding pair is the problem, the loss of a fish she loved is.

sorry to hear about your loss hun :(

I am so sorry to read this :-( , its awful loosing any fish.

OH NO!!! That's awful, so sorry. Cichlids are freaks that's what I'm really seeing now. Too much personality for their own good. These fish can be so unpredictable at times. At least you got your one batch.

Sorry to hear about your loss. My female killed my male Ram when they were breeding too, Cichlids can get so mean when breeding! You did all you could, too bad there wasn't a warning sign when you reintroduced them. Good luck with the last batch of fry.

Yes Mark, your right, I dont care about the breeding, in fact the pair were back in a 'community' set up as I wasnt concerned about keeping the eggs/fry.

I wont be introducing a new female, it was complete luck this pair formed and I dont want to see this happen to another female.

rrr mags thats such a shame, hate it when things like this happen, esp when someone puts all the time effort and care that you do.....unfort it has happened but cichlids are evil #$#%%..... least you still have one for the community :D
