I have this fish and he is the coolest thing I have ever seen. I got him from a friend of a friend. I would love to get another one but I cannot find one. It seems that no pet stores that I have went into have ever even seen one. Being new to this site I am unable to figure out how to paste pictures in my post so I put it in my profile. It is a bit small but it's at the top right of the screen. It is the only other pic in my profile besides my Avitar. It is called a "White Knifefish" or Orthosternarchus Tamandua. I found this single picture of one at this website below. There isn't much information available on these fish either. It is a true "Oddball" and I feel lucky to have the one I do. I have had mine for over a year and a half. I would love to find him a tankmate even though mine is a rather large individual. If anyone has any info on this fish on locating one I would appreciate it. Thanks!

WOW!
This fish is going to be very popular here... What to you feed him? It's so exciting, I can't wait till some of the other "oddballs" here give you their feedback.

ALASKA

He eats just about anything I put in the tank for him. He will eat feeders, flakes, veggies, bloodworms, shrimp brine and he really likes ghost shrimp. The ghost shrimp don't even make it to the bottom of the tank and all that is left is a some feelers stuck to my sponge filter.LOL I try to rotate his diet especially with the ghost shrimp, they get expensive. Sometimes I will even give him some of my beefheart mixture that I give my discus. Like I said he will eat anything. He is in a 155 gallon bow front with two Royal Knifefish and two Clown Knives. They all live peacefully even though he is double the size of the others. He is the star of my collection and he was free!

These fish reach huge sizes needing a minmum tank size of at least 250gallons IMO, Orthosternarchus tamandua, sometimes known as the White Knifefish, are complete carnivours and often will refuse all but live food. There isn't alot known anout this fish, as it is imported. A member of the Apteronotidae family, it has the same electric capabilities as the other knife fish. I am afraid to say this fish is extremely rare and hard to get hold of and with most fish of this description it will there fore meet a very high price. As I understand it they live in the very deep waters of the Amazon Basin making catching the fish extremely hard, and to add to the problem they are not particularly common. So I would think that someone fishing for fish like Zebra Plecs or other species that come from the same regions and depths may accidently stumble across it. It would be very intresting to here of your experiences with the fish, how big is it? What does it feed on?.....:)

As I said in my previous post he pretty much refuses nothing to eat regardless what the documentation says. He has his favorites but if it's in the tank floatinging around he will eat it. The other day a lady bug got into my tank and slirp it was gone. The current size of my fish is aprox, 18-20 inches. He is doing fine in his current tank, when I get my shop he can have a bigger tank. Maybe he will be in a display only tank at the store?

Sounds good GetTanked, best of luck with him and keep us posted on him and if you find any more.

Ive been on the lookout for one for quite some time as you can imagine. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help locate one. If for some chance I happen to locate a big pile of them for sale somewhere I will post my findings. I'm sure at their high price (just guessing it would be high for something like this) they won't hang around in the shops long. I too am in the process of opening a petstore dealing with 90% aquatics so I will always be bugging my distributors to locate these for me if at all possible. I just wish I knew where the original owner got this one. As I said it was from a friend of a friend. The original guy was moving so my friend took this fish from him, then my friend moved and I got ALL his fish including this one. I got his tanks too! Heehee. Gotta love fish people who are moving across country, they usually have to give up the fish. I only say usually because I moved from Nevada to Illinois and took the fish in the uhaul with me. A big rubbermaid container with a hole in the lid for a batter operated pump with an airstone. It was a 4 day trip and I didn't loose a single fish as a result. It was the move from hell but it worked out good for the fish.

wow , this may sound stupid , but when I first saw you picture I was thinking squid or cuddlefish . That white knife is kind of spokey looking [ to me anyway ] . Good luck with him[her ] maybe someday them .
