thank you very much ill get on to it straight away.
is it possible to have too much flow?

Shelagh on here got one of those bad boys...may be overkill for you mate..check the korallia range out..very reliable and you get good flow direction control

lol ok, i hacve seen a few others ranging from 1200lt ph to 2000lt ph which seem good but i will look at the korallia range also.
another thing. my ne0 301 filer gives out 680lt ph (googled it).
it did have the sprinkler (as i call it) on it but i have takenb this off, is that ok?

hi there, 1 more question sorry.

I have checked the external filter aparently gives 680lt per hour.
the rio tank i recently upgraded with came with a powerhead that apparently gives out 460lt per hour which i have connected at the same end of the tank as the oulet pipe from the filter, so this end of the tank has plenty of flow to both corners.

I have done some searching and purchased a korallia powerhead now for the other side of the tank which should then give plenty of flow all around the tank as you sugested, this should arrive in the next few days.

my question is, the rio 240 tank also came with an internal filter that at the time was siliconed to the inside of the tank. As i was going to use my external filter i removed this.
A relative told me today that I should set this up in the tank as well as the external, is this advisable or not necissary?
the filter was set up with media, and a dedicated slot for the 200w heater to sit inside the filter, and the powerhead also inside which sucked the water through the media and then out the side into the tank.

should I set this up as well as my external filter or is he only complicating things?

thank you

I have had the power heads running for a few days now, initially I saw a load of old food and muck come floating around the tank, but this has now gone. i presume its got sucked up the filter cos the powerheads are pointing at both ends of the tank so should not have settled anywhere. does not seem to have reduced the algae which is spreading by the day.
am selling my old tank so should be able to get the live rock soon to start the next step.

Have you rinsed out the filter yet? (if I remember right you're using a canister filter of some sort  ) If so go ahead and rinse that out w/some tank water from your water change. That'll take care of the extra nutrients that are coming from the food.

If you don't have a canister, then you're better out trying to find out where the stuff resettled and siphon it out.

there was mention of the cleanup crew before, what clean up crew would you recoment for reef tank ( as will have reef soon)?
i already have 2 fire shrimp, 1 sea urchin and 1 hermit crab.

i want to get some snails, which are best?
also any others you recomend? aprt from algae blennys

your all so helpful, im also going to be trying to start up a small copepod tank so i can feed live food to the fish, what would i need to feed to copepods?
i know i need to use heater and air pump and such like.

algae update: power heads appear to have resolved this problem.
the new powerhead has been up and running for over a week now and all the algae that was building up on the substrate appears to be almost gone, just a light brown hint left.
fingers crossed.

there is still some long hairy algae left on the rocks but i have ordered some nassarius vibex and a fighting conch from my local lfs to clear this up.
i am getting some rock tomorrow and once this is all in place i plan to get a powder blu tang.
I did want a puffer fish but have reluctantly had to dismiss this as im going to get corals soon and it would munch away on the coral so think it will have to be the tang.

also the copepod culture is under way for live food.

Woo hoo :good:

Although, can I urge a note of caution - PBT are not a beginners fish, they are not easy to keep and Ich prone, Also, 240 litres is not big enough for a tang imo

Anyways, congrats on sorting out the problem diatoms :good: excellent job

i went to the LFS yesterday with the intention of buying a few bits of ocean rock as the base for my live rock, but while i was there she told be about this advert in the local paper for a man selling 25kg of live rock.
so i rang them up. they had only got 15kg left.
so i went down there (about an hours drive) and came away with about 15 or 16kg of live rock, a huge external skimmer and a submersable pup for £25.
bargain.
