Depth for Butterfly fish

Are you talking about an African Butterfly Fish? I've never seen one go away from the surface. Kinda like hatchetfish - they like the top of the tank and stay there. I'm no expert tho ...

were you planning on putting anything else in there?

I used to have one. Ate everything we put in with it. heh neat fish otherwise =]
And ya it stayed at the top of the tank right near the surface ALWAYS.

They shouldn't care how deep the tank is :)

If you are comparing them to hatchets, they are a ferry boat and hatchets are like small motor boats  An ABFs mouth reminds me of a ferry boat

we have an abf in a 55 gallon and he rarely goes bellow the surface. if he does its only to hunt minnows. so i think a tank like that would be ok. you should have no problem finding one. my lfs has tons of them. :D its great to watch at feeding time, he loves crickets. he likes to have a plant on the surface to hide in.

lol so true in that comparison! the ABF's mouth reminds me of a drawbridge. fierce mouth.
The only thing that ABFs and hatchets have in common is I've never seem either one stray from the surface ... totally different after that

My ABF, recently deceased, every once and a while liked to go for a quick dive, but id say 95% of the time stayed at the surface. Your tank should be fine. My ABF never ate any smaller fish, just stuck to crickets and flake food.
