Im having some major problems with my planted nano tank, fish and shrimp drop like flies almost as soon as they are added. I also watched an otto go ballistic and jump out of the tank. The other one is also acting strange. All stats are fine, and water quality is top notch due to water changes every other day (it can be the changes as others do this with no problems).

I read recently that airwick type air fresheners can kill fish in tanks. I dont have one of those but I do use deodorant in the room. There is another tank in the room but that one has a lid and no problems in there whatsoever.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matter? Would be good to pin this issue down and sort it out.

Thanks for the help

Sam

I wouldn't use deodorant in your room.

Out of interest, is that just a tip or have you heard of it being a problem?

Shouldn't be using sprays near tanks.
And even worse if the tank has no lid.

most spays have a warning on the back saying dangerous to aquatic life

It couldn't be that you forgot to use dechloroniser in the new water, right?

Nearly all aerosol sprays of any type and even many "pump" bottle sprays (cleaning products, deodorizers, scents, pesticides, etc) can be extremely toxic to aquatic animals. If one tank is covered and having fewer problems, and the trouble tank is open to the air, I'd say that's a clear indicator of your problem right there.

I agree.

Righty ho! No more sprays in the room, just hope it works. Wish I knew this months ago, I hate loosing fish especially if its because I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks for the help people :)

BTW - pH is low but fine ;) and I dont necessarily agree with the whole pH swing thing, EI requires 50% water changes and has never resulted in health problems, Tom Barr has even done tests with 80-90% water changes, hence very sudden pH shifts, he reports no problems.

I went off it with my wife for spraying deodorant in the same room as my tank, she only did it once. Never again!
