hi everyone
my favourite guppy started giving birth this morning but every one of them id dead and some have extremly large heads, :( why is this not a 1 was born alive and she had about 50 of them, the test readings are fine so why is this, at one point she had one stuck for about 1 hour so i put my hand in and gave her belly a rub(which she didn,t mind and she shot about 6 out at once any ideas

Extended inbreeding might cause disfigurement and otherwise unhealthy offspring. It's also possible that the parents have lived in severely wrong water conditions or have some disease that has negative effects on the offspring.
What are proper test readings? If this fish is a highly refined form it probably requires alkaline (pH near 8 ) and hard water.

I agree, have you used medication on the guppys while or before she came pregnant, great to hear you helped the guppy out giving birth. :)

Extensive inbreeding can cause deformed or stillborn young but it is not all that common. Usually less than 1/2 of the young are deformed even with several generations of inbreeding.

Did you use a breeder net/trap or did she give birth in a tank of her own? Many times breeder nets/traps can cause the young to be born premature or deformed because of the massive stress that the pregnant female is under.

readings ph 7.5
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
i also do a 25% water change weekly and i always vacuum the gravel
any ideas :/
p.s
shes 6 months old

Have you been line-breeding with your guppies? If you have been extensively inbreeding to get certain traits the babies can be deformed or dead at birth. Also was this her first pregnancy? Guppies can sometimes have trouble with their first pregnancy, I don't know why but I have lost several females who physically had a hard time giving birth.

no,the father is my brothers guppy which he gave to me a while ago shes had perfectly healthy babies before, i startin to think it could be the melifix, what do you think :dunno:

I haven't heard of any birth defects from melafix before but I am not counting it out. It could be stress related, especially since you had to treat with melafix. My guess would be premature delivery caused by stress related illness. As long as she seems to have recovered she should be good to breed again just keep an eye on whatever offspring she has to see if there is some kind of lingering effects from the melafix use.
