Dead Plec?

LOL, what fish and any other inhabitants do you currently have in your tank? What are the actual dimensions of the tank?

I have 2 male guppies and 6 females (i raise the babies in another tank) 2x12x11

You forgot one thing they need the same love and attention as the other fish and i have had people say 'eeew what's that ugly thingy stuck to your ship ornament' and i have replied with 'that's my plec and don't say eeew to him he's a really nice fish just like the rest of them'.

All the love that disney and pokemon teach us cant keep fish alive, correct size tanks for the correct species keeps fish alive ultimately this is going to keep happening if you just replace the plec with the same species of plec.

If you want to keep a plec in that tank have a look at bulldog plecs also known as L187 http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=1605 that gets to 2.8 inches and is about the only plec suitable, affordable and findable for you and your tank .

Update: Will hopefully be updating the tank to a 4ft in the next week or so if not then i'll take him back to the shop as he is still so small and has really good character.

A four foot tank is still not big enough for a sailfin, you need at least a 6 foot because they get so big! Also if you do upgrade make sure you get an external filter as internals wont be able to keep up with the poop

Even though a 6x2x2 would be ideal it's not really the minimum size, 4x2x2 is bare minimum with 5x2x2 been better and obviously bigger than that is always going to still be better.

If the OP is going to upgrade to a 4 foot tank, there are plenty of different species which would fit and at quite a reasonable price.

I have a few bristlenose plecs and they are supposed to keep failrly small - right little characters they are too!

How big is your tank? cause mines only 2ft so i don't know if a bristlenose would fit as i have been told they won't. I MIGHT (sorry for caps) be upgrading to a 4ft it really depends. Hopefully i will :hyper: .

Why not get a bristlenose (or pair in bigger tank) - they are easy to get hold of, cheap and don't grow into huge monsters like sailfins. Also have a look at the pinned article at the top of this Plec Section which lists dozens of suitable small plecs under 8 inches for ideas. Choose a species and see if your lfs has them in stock or can order one for you

It's a 3 foot tank holding 165 litres, but it's quite deep (to the back if you get my drift - as opposed to deep down!). See piccy link in signature bit

Plenty of room for a couple of bristlenose plecs then but DON'T get another common or sailfin plec!
