Hi,

I have been posting my history of my platty problems.

This morning one of the few sick looking ones was dead and he was turned half white (tip of mouth to nearly half of his body). Very bright white. I have never seen this before. The other sick ones have passed on .. not turning white .. over the last few days

Should I treat my tank with some medication in case this is catching.

I have only one other sick looking platty with a red/orange looking patch on his top fin ... all other fish (danioes) including platty fry are looking fine. I would love to keep the fry safe for my son. He is attached as I am. They are swimming, eating and don't show any signs of distress.

here is the photo of the red/orange patch on my platty

I have tested PH and its around 7.4 and trying to lower it with PH down but it doesnt seem I am putting enough in. The pet shop told me not to use too much but how much is too much. And they said not to put the powder straight in as it burns the fish .. any thoughts to help me adjust this level and what level should I aim for. The package says 7 but they told me to keep it higher. It turns blue when I perform the test .. not green meaning acid.

They didn't tell me to test for anything else but I do regular water changes and gravel cleans.

My danioes just keep powering on but I seem to have problems with platties and guppies. The female guppies seem to slump over maybe from exhaustion from the male ... and then die.

This fish tank is really for my son and I don't have lots of time but don't want to put fish in misery. Is there some sort of fish like danios that are easier to keep ... so I don't lose so many (and put them in an early grave).

Thanks Desley

OK - here's my try. First off I'm no expert here but..... with 7.4 ph I'd not be trying to change it. I would get a tester for other levels... I'd try melafix, not so much as a med. more just as a booster for my fish. I've not tried it with fry but I would unless someone says NOT to. I wish you the best of luck, my daughter is also very invested in my fry tank (thry might as well be her kids), so I know where you are coming from there. ;)

ALASKA

Hi Alaska,

THANK YOU. You seem to be the only one to respond to my messages and appreciate it.

I did manage very slowly to get the PH down to around 7.2... mayb 7.1. Not that sure my test kit is not that good. It's a match the colour type one.

I did ask the shop about melafix and they sold me Easy Life filter media instead ... damn shop ....

but today they are all looking good (touch wood).

I still just have this mysterious red/orange mark on my white & red platty that worries me.

I put the photo up on the first message if anyone out there knows what it is and should I get him out of the tank.

I don't have a hospital tank but I could put him in a little bowl and change his water and maybe ... I'm thinking salt wash.

I've been adding salt to the tank .. probably too much I don't know if you can use too much.

A tablespoon mixed in a bit of water added over half hour or so. With my water changes maybe I am loosing some but I think im adding more salt than taking out.

Any suggestions .. water change to get rid of some salty water ... or leave it if they look happy.

Thanks again .... fry happy so we are happy for now anyway :-(

Danios still going strong ... funny little guys those fish ....

Are Cherry Barbs a good community fish.

THANKS AGAIN ALASKA

As long as you add the salt slow enough I don't think you will hurt them much. I am sure their is a point that you can get too much. I think the salt should help the wound some.
I haven't looked at the picture but red could be bacterial or a parasite if it is a bump. I also think melafix is more of a preventative than a treatment. I don't think it will hurt the fry. I used it with my guppies but I can't remember how young the babies were.
