dead live rock

Most beaches are protected, there for no. But dead rock does become live again if thats what you want to know. It would make ok base rock provided it did not have any hich hikers.

i have already collected some and it has been out in the air for a few weeks so all life should be dead some of the pieces are quite large that is why i want to use it and save me some money.

i was just wondering if it could have any things that could last being in the air for a long time and then harm any thing in the tank.

thx

Just to raise a point...

What do you want to do with this rock? is it for filtration purpose or purely for looks?

If looks then it should be fine but remember that its going to use up space that liverock could use and this rock provides filtration as well as looks.

If its for filtration purposes then the rock in question becaomes i mportant. Where i live we have loads of rock but its a granite coastline so the rock is very hard and solid (i.e. not porous at all) and thus provides no filtration purposes at all. Some of the rocks around my coastline have enriched tin within them also and this can leech back i nto the tank. (Not good)

If the rockin your area is a porous rock that allows water to pass through then it will become live rock eventually and you will get the looks as well as good filtration ability. Research the coastline first IMO and find out the types of rock you have in your locality.

im not sure what type of rock it is and i would like to use it fro both looks and filtration is there a way of telling if is good or not

im quite sure it is good tho because one piece has an imprint of a coral like the green coral in the pic in the link prob not the same one of course but similar shape. the rocks have lots of holes and some have shells in them and dead stuff and they smell :p

If you put pressureon it does it crumble ? (A bit like sandstone) If so then its porous and will offer some form of filtration.

probably a bad sign, is it shaped like dead coral?

Also not to hijack but we ought to find a new name for dead live rock, its to much of a mouthfull, I suggest "undead rock", sure it sounds a bit satanic but we could make it work.

:p i agree a new name would be good

it doesnt look like dead coral but it does have imprints of coral or something i would take a pic but the digital camera is over in europ some where at the moment :p

thx for the help i think ill just buy it all.

Over here in the UK we called "dead liverock" Reefbones

I have tons of sandstone lying round, I have a couple huge piece's that i would love to put in my tank but i dont know if they're safe or not, and if it will colour up like my other live rock?

Most of it was collected by my brother at the shore over the years. But how on earth do you break this stuff, I've tried jackhammers, dropping it outa my window, have broken about 3 hammers on it, and it just breaks small little pieces of.

You have to cut sand stone. You should be able to rent a concreat cutter, they are gas powered and work well. If they are thin you can use a tile cutter.
