John Paul, the L200 died. I have no idea why... He was fine, eating, normal and happy looking the day before yesterday. Yesterday I couldn't see him and assumed he was hiding... and then today he turns up dead, floating and smelly.

I'm at a loss... maybe it was the hot weather? I lost a molly last week I think from the weather and the temperature fluctuations. Everything looked fine, no fin rot, good eyes, good appetite, perfect colour...

He lived in a 100gal community tank with other plecs, none of whom bully him, sand substrate, thousands of caves, wood, live plants, enough filtration... he ate a diet of catfish pellets, algae wafers, cockles, mussels, prawns, squid, bloodworm... the only thing I can think of is the temparature fluctuations of the last few weeks. They've been fluctuating between 25C and 30C almost daily because of the hot weather. This in turn would have effected the oxygen levels and pH... damn damn damn this weather... roll on winter.

No ! :-( So sorry for your loss. I know how much you loved him.

It could very well have been the weather. Though what are your water stats like ?

open the top and turn out the lights - get a fan and point it at the surface - all will help lower the temps - Mind you a 100gal should be fairly stable.

Ours fell just 3º over a 2 day period when I forgot to plug the heater back in :*)

smithrc, your common plec looks like my common plec! he's called merlin...

thanks for the advice, I don't actually own a fan but I will see about getting one (or four) for the tanks. Luckily rain seems to have set in, in sunny london now and it's not too bad heat-wise.

bloozoo... I meant to tell you when I got it, but I got the 100gal and the striped raphael is doing fine (well, he was alive when I put him in, I haven't seen him since) and now lives with two others. I think they inhabit a hollow 'log-like' big bogwood piece. The two danios are happy and shoaling and not fighting and the one with the raggedy fins has grown his fins back again so all is good :D

Fab news ! Very glad to hear they are all doing well and have a mansion of a house to live in !
