Dead Fish

i usually find that armoured fish, like cories and plecs sink instantly. i have never a seen a dead cory floating. i think for a certain period other types of small fish will float, and eventually sink. thats what seems to happen in my experience. if left long enough everything seems to sink. im interested in knowing what happens when big fish die ? if a 6" plus fish dies, do they float ? i have a 6-7 inch syno, and my initial reaction is its big so it would sink, maybe because of the inability to regulate its swim bladder ? but then when i go freshwater fishing, and see similar sized fish floating on the surface, confusing.

i have recently lost 6 Panda cories...and all but 1 floated when dead.

well then, you have a good indication of the cause of their deaths!

It's simple. If your fish are witches, then they float
lol nice connection. sadly though, most fish float all the time.

humm so does that mean all fishes are witches. dead or alive?

The various stages of decomposition will determine whether or not they sink or float, once they reach the bloat stage twere the intestines are digesting themselves and rotting down there will be quite a lot of gas within the fish so it is likely that it will float. It is temperature dependent as well as already mentioned.

@Mobiz. the swim bladder will fill according to the water density. as far as i am aware, it should give a fish, neutral buoyancy, as standard. lol. the. fish then adjusts to either sink or rise.

So as per my above post, could it be to do with loss of control of the swim bladder? Fills with air on death/loses voluntary control, fish floats. Not meaning to put a dampner on the science of temperate vs tropical floating above, but see below.

Ive lost 2 C.Panda over the last several month, all sunk. Both found looking like they were alive, sat on the bottom on their belly like normal, just very washed out colour and clouded eyes. Alomst like they had just died on the spot.

Relating back to the above reply to Raptor, this is the same fish, Hayz's floated, mine and Moochy's sunk.........

no, not as far as i am aware. its the build up of gasses that causes tropical to float
swim bladder problems tend to make the fish struggle to maintain equilibrium, not float to the top. well for the most part anyway.
