De-clawing cats

But... Megthefish, why in the WORLD would you declaw an outdoor cat?
First of all, IT WASN'T MY CHOICE. I was seven years old at the time. You think I had much say in it? Not excatly. It was my parents discision.
They weren't SUPPOST to be outdoor cats. They were suppost to be indoor cats. We got them declawed, but it was freakin impossible to keep them inside. They would literally DISTROY the house. And I'm not joking. They wanted outside that badly. If we didn't let them outside, they would of probably chewed a hole through the door to get out. This probably has something to do with the fact that they were born and lived outside. They had never been inside.
Also, my parents had just got new furniture. They didn't want that recked. We tried leaving them clawed, but it just didn't work out.
If declawing a cat was THAT horrible, then vets wouldn't do it. Think about that. If I were to get a cat again I wouldn't declaw it, because not a lot of people think its right to do that anymore. Keep in mind that it was 7 years ago that this happened. But I don't want to get into a fight about this, so I'm not going to say anymore on the matter (enless I really really feel the urge to and I can't help myself :p )

Our office always has declaw consultations with owners and the Dr talks to them for at last 40 minutes before having them consider getting declaws done. He gives other alternatives first. If he thinks the owner is doing it for the wrong reasons or if the the cat wont be indoors for the rest of it's life he WONT do it! He also put the cats on Meloxicam a week before surgery and two weeks after surgery and keeps them over night. Also puts them on a different kind of litter called yesterday's news and requires two rechecks. He really doesn't like doing it and doesn't do them that often because he knows it's a painful surgery and he does try with all his heart to convince owners of other options... too bad not all vets are in the practice for the animals and do it no questions asked.

Meg, I had no idea how old you were, you never indicated that it wasn't your choice. You said the cats were declawed, defended the procedure, and then stated that your cats were outdoor and could do everything normally. Read your post from a person's point of view who knows nothing about you. It sounded like you chose to have your outdoor cats declawed, and I was so surprised at that, I asked why. You did not seem too disapproving of the procedure in your post, thus it seemed to me you had no problem with it. I had no intention of jumping on you or attacking you, I was truly surprised and could not fathom what the situation was there.

Oops, sorry. I guess I just assumed you knew how old I was (because I've posted it a few times...)
