I'm not sure danios are in this category. I had a glofish (zebra danio) die in my tank today. I just took a water sample to petsmart and ammonia nitrites and nitrates were all the lowest color on the scale. I did introduce 3 new mollies an angel and an oto to the tank today. It's a small angel way too small to eat the danio. And actually he may have died before I put the new fish in. The only others that have died were 4 black mollies BUT the Lfs gave me 5 males instead of 4 females 1 male. With my male and female cremecicle that was way out of balance so they may have just been chased to death. And I had one neon tetra totally disappear out of the 5 I put in. I don't want to keep losing fish. Petsmart said ph was 7.8 and alkalinity was 180+kh ppm. Any help would be appreciated.

What size is the tank?

How many litres per hour does the filter turn over?

When did you complete the cycling of the tank?

Please list the entire stock currently in the tank.

The tank is 30 gallons. Just looked up the filter. It is 200 gph would that be roughly 750 litres per hour? The stock is:

Existing:
Rainbow shark (1)
Zebra danio (6) 3 as glofish 3 traditional
Neon tetra (4)
Mollies (3) 2 male 1 female
Ghost shrimp - can't count them but I'd guess about a dozen left alive

New:
Angel (1)
Oto (1)
Mollies (3) female

By the way nothing schools in the tank. When I can buy another I may do one with like 30 neon tetras.

As far as when I finished cycling the tank I don't know. I am just going off the numbers from yesterday. I didn't test in between. I've had it only about 5 weeks though I started it with the sand gravel and filter media as the previous users. It was empty a few days so I'm sure there was sig dieback in the bacteria but I guess it helped it cycle quickly. This fish was in the tank before it finished cycling.

I am still new to fish keeping, and no expert. But it sounds like your fish may have gotten sick from being in the tank while it was cycling.

I did a "fish in cycle" and after about 2 weeks one of my 5 danios got very listless. I joined an Australian forum (that's where I am) looking for advice and I was told there (rather harshly I thought) that they would all die and it was pretty much my fault.

Well, they didn't all die, but I did loose 2 Danios to the mysterious sickness which I guess was probably Ammonia poisoning. I'll never know for sure as I never got an ammonia reading.... Finally I got a Nitrate reading.

Anyway, that may be what has happened to yours.

Apparently, even if they live, once having lived through a "fish in cycle" they can be weakened and more susceptable to other things.

This seems true enough to me. I got 4 more and it turns out they came with worms! One of the new ones died, but I also lost a couple of the old ones before the treatment was done! oi

I suggest not getting anymore fish and doing very regular water tests and changes until things settle down.

You need a test that will test for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. PH is prob the least of your worries.

I'd prob not get any more until nobody else dies for at least a month.

good luck!!

Don't know what you mean by settle down. My ammonia nitrite and nitrate readings are perfect. Also there was no period where he looked sick. Very energetic and then dead.

If you haven't been testing reguarly while cycling your levels could have spiked and you wouldn't have known it.

This is what happened to me. I never ever even got an Ammonia reading, but I was only testing every other day.

By settle down, I mean no fish are dieing. Sounds like you have already lost a few.

good luck

Lost a black Molly female today. More concerning the silver Molly is missing an eye! Any ideas on the culprit?

If i were to hazard a guess, that if it isnt your water conditions (which you seem to say are fine, although you havnt given us your readings) then i would point a finger at the shark.

Can water conditions make an eye fall off?

Poor water conditions can lead to all sorts of bacterial infections. I wouldnt rule anything out. but like i said, its probably the shark, its not the greatest addition to a community tank.
