Stupid q...

We're probably (fingers crossed) going to be in a position to start stocking our tank soon so we're planning to start with a shoal (6 or 10 depending on price) danio's and then in a couple of months plan to introduce some tetra's and would like eventually to introduce a single betta into the equation...

Would this mix of fish work?

Do people have any other recommendations for a hardy 'starter' fish? (The tank is being cycled without fish but I'd prefer a hardy type for the first batch to be introduced)

First how big is your tank?
What kind of danios do you want. Zebra danios are hardy, very active and inexpensive.
What kind of tetras do you want. I don't know much about tetras.
The danios and the tetras are pretty small and peaceful so that should work. It could be a hit or miss with the betta though. Some bettas are always peaceful. Some may try to chase your smaller fish around (and the tetras might nip at its fins). Some bettas start out laid back and then all of a sudden turn into jaws so...
just be careful with the betta choice. You might luck up.

I would keep the betta out. It'll probably be tormented so much by the tetras, and it'll almost definately get fin nipped. Also, the minimum tank size I would recommend for Danios is 20g, because they are very fast, active fish. Too active for anything smaller.

Okay, that rules out the danio's - the tank is 60ish liters (60x30x35 (lxwxh))... what other hardy fish would be recommended as the first fish into the tank?

Cheers :)

We've not even stocked our first tank yet and we're hooked so suspect there will be a larger tank on its way soon - something nice and big - 120 / 200 l size

yeah definately leave the betta out of the equation. if you really love them get a little 5g tank and set it up for the betta alone, they'll be much happier and a 5g costs bugger all, takes hardly any maintenance or space.

danio's will survive quite happily in a 15gish tank, however to really apreciate they're full nature get a big group of them in a big tank and just watch them.

depends if you want your fish to survive or thrive

platy's are good hardy fish in a nice range of colours, swordies are also quite similar but a little nicer IMO

look at rasbora's too, loads of lovely ones that aren't quite as active as danio's would be.

maybe a small shoal of tetra's/rasbora's and then a trio of apistogramma's somethng like cacatuoides or agassizzi. think that'd work lovely, you'd need to make plenty of caves with rocks and give the apistogramma's homes to hide in.

After being in the lfs this afternoon I think our first inhabitants will be a shoal of platy's...

I have 6 danios (Zebra, Pearl & Golden) in a 60tr tank and they are fine!

They may seem fine but in a larger tank they will act much more naturally because they usually tend to follow each other nose to tail at high speed around the tank.

By the way, I have Danios, Tetras and a Betta. No problems, but as stated it can be a luck thing with this mix because I am lucky in that there are enough plants and hidey holes for each fish to enjoy their tank without fear of always having their fins nipped by another species.

In fact if there is any nipping going on its a danio nipping a danio or a glolight nipping a glolight.
