Hi all,

This may be a. nothing b. my imagination, but one of my danios is a markedly different shape to the others. Basically, where the others are nice and streamlined, this little one has a 'triangular bump' on his underside (I'm sorry about the quality of the pic, but he/she wouldn't stay still long enough to pose for the camera!!)

Behaviour-wise, it appears to be normal and eating as per usual...

Any ideas?

I see what you mean.
Is the lump internal or external.
Does the lump look hard or soft like filled with fluid.
Has the lump just suddenly appeared.
Check his anus to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.

Hi Wilder,

The lump is definitely internal, so I can't really tell if it's hard or soft (but it doesn't move or 'swing' when the fish swims, so I'd take a guess at it being solid). I'm going to have another good look tonight because now you mention it, I'm having trouble recalling if it's one of the males or the females. If it's a female, then it's definitely a new occurrence because the other 'girls' are more plump...

I'll also have a look at his anus and poo-ing habits - and report back.

(One thing that does come to mind is that I saw a 'blast' of white string-y poo a couple of days ago.. I don't know who it came from though or if that's important!)

Hmmmm... curious...

If its hard it could be a tumour.
Long stringy white poo can be constipation, bacterial, internal parasites.

if the zebra danio looks a bit fatter than the rest, then it may just be a female.

it might be fatter but you can see the lump.
All you can do is issolate and try a bacterial med.

does the lump appear then maybe the next day its not there, but comes back the day after or so (i know what i mean) one of my danios get something similar to this, and its just a greedy danio that eats so much its stomach bulges out. after a good poop its stomach is back to normal but swells up again the next time it eats :)

(Sorry! Meant to get back to this yesterday, but work curtailed Internet Activity!!)

I'm gonna ask A Daft Newbie Question:

Do female fish keep producing eggs non-stop or do they have to be in tip-top breeding condition (i.e. health, water stats, etc) to start producing eggs? And if so, they would need to expel these eggs from time to time, right? Regardless of any courtship? Could it be that this female was full of eggs then after squidging them out, hass just slimmed down so she can produce more?

Because one of my other danio females is looking slimmer today too.

Health-wise, they are all still zipping around and eating well. I'm trying to catch a glimpse of what happens - and comes out - when they poo and the vent looks normal compared to the other fish in the tank.
