I`ve got an Nvidea 8500gt card running with 250mb on board cashe runni9ng on a comp with windows vista....

the problem is that every time we try to play a game on our pc the graphics lock up and the screen comes up with no signal and then the monitor goes into stand by and wont come back on without re-booting the pc......

any help please people??? is it software conflict as Ive downloaded the latest drivers, and that hasn`t cured it.and the pc should be well above minimum spec for the games, so cant see the peoblem there any help will be greatly appreciated

ill bet it is a stock power supply, if thats the case then u need a bigger power supply to handle that big of a card is what it sounds like to me

the Psu is 500w, running vista premium, and an AMG athlon 64 x2 4000+ cpu.

thanks for the help people...

no idea all the recipt says is 500w ePsu

Why would the Psu be the problem?

i would download the latest bios upgrade for both card and comp, also download the drivers from nvidia, not microsoft. however overheating may be a cause too.

We`ve got all the latest drivers direct from Nvidea and from the games to no avail

the comp has done this since it was new so dust ect in the case shouldn`t cause over heating

Ok I've just fixed my pc doing simular, was it cutting out when playing games or watching films or other intensive visual stuff.

I had a FX5200 with 128 meg on XP doing this

How ever on inspection some of the caps had something on them so got a new GFX card and all fixed now my PC is now smoother than a babies bottom.

500w PSU should be fine unless you have loads of fans and equipment, i got a 550w PSU with a total of 8 80mm fans and a 110mm CPU fan

some low end manufacturers of psu, can make 500 to 600 watt psu but if the 12v rails are crap then the psu is useless if stressed too hard.
+12V rail supplies power to components that draw the most amount of current.

what are the other components of the pc,

RAM, hard drive , dvd drives etc?

might just be the gfx card cant handle vista & games.
low res settings ingames?

Yeah sounds like a PSU issue to me. The wattage of the PSU is not the only thing you have to consider. The ampage on the 12v lines are just as (if not more) important. You want at least 15amps on the 12v line (or more). I have built a lot of high end PC's and used a lot of different power supplies. Even using expensive 600-700w psu's I have seen this happen with power hungry video cards and processors when their ampage has been low (ie a 500w 18amp psu worked while a 700 10amp psu failed).

When the video card switchs to 3d mode it uses more power. If you have a low ampage then the sudden drian on the 12v line causes the PC to shut down. Thats one of the biggest problems with the latest video cards, they use a lot of power.

Edit: Does it happen right away or after it has been running for awhile? It could also be overheating.
