I've got a metal tank stand for my new tank - you know the type just the frame nothing else - the daft question is .....

Does it need a wooden top + the polystyrene - or do you just plonk the tank on top of it with the weight then just being carried round the edges ala Juwel tanks?

I've never done this put your own tank together stuff before - bet ya can't tell!! :D

The only daft question is the one you dont ask!!

Speaking from my experience with metal stands i would advise the following.

If the bottom of the tank is flat then you need to use polystyrene. Around the edge of the metal frame. Putting a piece of board around the top wont hurt the tank, if you use a piece of board you need to cover it all with polystyrene.

If its a floating tank like a juwel you will be fine with out anything cos of the design.

Hope that helps

:) Not a daft question at all! Go with what whacky says and things should be OK. Have you moved yet? and did it go as planned? ;) Mac.

we've got pilots in here somewher Davy spotted an aviator. :p lol. I think someone meant "avatar"
The advice give is good but silly question.... Wibble wibble.. silly answer. There's no silly questions on this board apart from the cgat section it's the only place they're allowed.

Tank is (I think I haven't got it yet ;) ) 36" by 15", stand is 36" by 12" ( I think I haven't set it up yet ;) )

Move is a week today - we get the new house on Friday - missives were concluded before lunch today  :D

and I now have a sample of Perth tap water  :) so guess what my job is this evening! Although the guy who gave it to me thinks he is probably on a different reservoir to our new house - I hope it isn't too different from the water I have (But if the water is too different to here I'll be moving the water across anyway!)

I thought I needed an avator to rival you lot

Bah Humbug - all our old wood got thrown in a skip a fortnight ago - D'Oh!

If those sizes are right you will need a piece of board, that amout of overlap is likley to give you wet carpet syndrome. Tanks are designed to take most of the weight around the edge with the stand you got that wont happen you will have the front and back overlaping the stand an hense not a lot of edge in contact with the stand.

If the tank and stand don't match, I would not use the stand. The metal stands are designed to support the weight of the appropriate size tank. A larger tank gets heavier quite quickly. It is a bad habit to not start with the best foundation possible for the investment of time and money you will have.
I would get a correctly sized stand for your tank, and then buy a tank that goes on the metal stand you have now :D

Simple answer get 36"x12" tank :D

Thanks guys.

OK quick recap:

if I get 36"X12" tank to go with said stand I won't need a board, but it would be better to use it. I need polystyrene wherever tank touches stand/wood anyway.

yes/no?

OK need to recalculate fish now ;)
