Cycling.

Yes, getting a tank cycled is one of those hurdles that a lot of new keepers have trouble getting the grasp of, especially those with little knowledge of basic science (like me :X ! )

And simply adding good established filter media would make life a whole lot easier for sure.

While AngelPlus may well have worked out for you, it may not work for others for various reason. I have googled AngelPlus and have seen this is a USA based company as well, am in the UK so UK members would not be able to get media so therefore likely still having to go through the cycling process.

Going through a successful cycle is no bad thing at all. In fact it is immensely satisfying whether its your first or 100th time, and you actually do really learn a lot about how the cycle actually works and what should be looked out for and how it affects the stocking and all sorts of other factors which is beneficial knowledge to have for fishkeeping.

Getting esatblished media and adding to your filter is a very easy thing to do and folks doing this will probably learn very little this way but avoiding the stress of testings, water changes, ammonia dosages and what should be done next but learning this at the same time is invaluable.

Depends on your point of view which is best in the long term. Both methods do indeed have their pros and cons.

Nice little debate this :)

Sorry but missed that you are in the UK. On the subject of water testing, water changes etc. I wholeheartedly agree that we need to be educated on those things but ,I guess, I kind of thought that sort of maintaining a cycled tank. Yes I do enjoy a good debate. Funny thing is forty or fifty years ago when I had my first tank I don't think anyone thought about the nitrogen cycle. For that matter regular water changes and water testing. We've come a long way since then and my hair is a lot more grey as well. Have a good day or evening.:)
