Cycling?

Can snails and/shrimp help cycle a tank at all? How about Java Moss and/or Jave Fern?

I started my tank over a few days ago and just did my first test, I only have four, tiny ramshorns in there that came with Java Moss.


pH: 7.6
Ammonia: 0.50
Nitrite: 0.25
Nitrate: 0

Does that sound about right for the beginning of a cycle? The gravel I'm using is from before, so I'm sure there's some bacteria left on that, as well as in the filter.

Are you fishless cycling ie adding ammonia? What size tank?
