Cycling The 90 Gallon

well when im adding ammonia every day regardless of the readings, when i saw my nitrites rise i then started putting 3 drops ammonia per 10 gallon... now my ammonia is 0.1, and my nitrites are about 3, and I have been doing this cycle for 13 days now. Is this a good sign?

Btw if I went to my lfs, or my friend and got a used filter cartridge, would this speed the cycle up any?

Hi everyone, I am just going through the cycling stage myself now and was wondering what the 12 hour rule with Ammonia is? Obviously having only started yesterday, I've got a long way to go, but does this 12 hour concept apply to fishless cycling only?

Thanks

Hi guys,I've got this theory, which has worked well for with all my tank cycling, the beneficial bacteria grows/attaches to all surface area in a tank, not just the obvious filter media. And with substrate/gravel having the largest surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow, So what i do is take gravel/sand from a mature aquarium sprinkle it on the filter media (make sure no gravel can get into the impellar though.)and sprinkle over the new gravel. If you've gone with different gravel in the new tank just place mature sand in a net bag and distribute round the tank. Ask your local lfs for a bit of there sand if you haven't got another mature tank, they're normally helpful when you explain you'll soon been needing stock :hey: I've found using this method and 20% water from a mature tank normally yields a complete cycle in just over a week. :D

YAY GOOD NEWS!!!
Tested the water and:
0.25 Ammonia
0.50 Nitrites
20 Nitrates

Is this cycling finally getting somewhere? If it is give me an estimate on how many days.
