Maybe you could find someone in your area willing to give you some of their mature filter media?  
 
When you test your water you could also try testing the water a few times more and see if the results are consistent. Or, if the readings come back different if there is one reading that you can repeat more often!

daize- Tetra has made changes to the product. I doubt we can find accurate information about what hey are now doing with it. Clearly, they are not doing what Dr. Tim does. I am less certain about the efficacy of TSS now than I was before the changes.
