Cycle with siamese fighting fish?

I have just got my first tropical fresh water aquarium. I have had experience with Siamese fighting fish in a wine glass before. I was wondering what everyone thought of having a fighter in a tank for cycling since they can get oxygen from the surface not just from disolved oxygen in the water. I guess it would still suffer a bit but maybe not as much as some other fish.
Any advice appreciated.

I hope it was a huge wine glass!

As long as you keep Ammonia & Nitrite low it should be fine, keep them around 0.25ppm with water changes.
