Hi, just after a bit of advice as im a bit worried.

I got bitten/stung by something on saturday night, it swelled up, massive lump, painful etcetc, anyway, I've just bought a load of new plants and was putting them in, then halfway through realised i didnt have any gloves on, i only had a few more plants to do so i finished them and washed my hand pretty well, but im just wondering, should i go to minor injuries just to have it checked out? I've heard of all the infections etc you can get from tanks and I'm really worried now!

I wouldn't worry about it, take an anti-histamine and if anything else develops go and get it checked out, the odds of you contracting a disease from a fish tank are very low indeed.

No anti-histamines, paracetamol and a fair bit of washing it with anti bacterial?

No need for paracetamol, just give it a rinse with water and cover with a dressing, your body will more than likely produce histamine as part of an inflammatory response, which is why taking an anti-histamine is advisable.

I am a walking disaster area at the moment, i have a twisted ankle and a broken toe on the other foot and full of bruises and cuts. the other day I went over on my twisted ankle and fell in a heap grazing my arm and didn't even think abt sticking my hand in the tank. I've always got cuts n brusies all over my hands and always have my hands in hiding various munchies for the fish. Deffo on the antihistamine mind if it is an insect bite and has swollen up. Either take the medicine/pills or use cream (don't put hand in tank then ;))

if your hand falls off, start getting worried then

Rather not let it get that far, hence me asking here.

The bite was from saturday and its gone down a lot since then, it was just the putting an open cut into tank that i was worried about :)

i wouldnt worry too much , youre exposed daily to more germs etc on things like door handles etc . by the nature of my work ive often got cuts/nicks etc on my hands and in 3 years of sticking them in fish tanks ive had no problems

If it were me, i'd probably be tempted to cut the limb off that has the bite on it, just in case it spreads :(

or buy a giant bottle of spirit(vodca/whisky whatever your tipple). get a small piece of cotton wool and dab the spirit onto the would. the alcohol will kill any germs. I can't think of any suggestions for the rest of the bottle though ;) ;)

I've had cuts on my hands and have never had any trouble when digging around in my tank.
In fact, most of the time after I have had my hands in the tank scrubbing or planting etc I find my hands are so smooth!! Maybe fish poop is a beauty secret!!

well they used to use Ambergris (whale vomit) in perfumes!

Yes, fish tanks *can* harbour some very nasty bacteria.. the guy 2 doors down from my parents cut himself cleaning their fishtank and got quite sick for a while because of it. But in general terms it's very rare.

You also hear of people getting a Staph inspection after an operation in hospital, and that can also be very serious. But Staph occurs everywhere, your skin is probably teeming with it right now but it does no harm because the body's immune system takes care of it. So even the fact that there's bacteria there doesn't mean you will get ill.

As long as you are otherwise healthy I wouldn't worry about contracting a disease from your fish tank. There are plenty of riskier hobbies!
