Culture Fruit Flies For Your Bettas?

Yeah, I'd quiver too, but it would be a kind of fun kind of amusement park ride quiver.

Ok, Synirr, when are we going to see the HM CT BF Cambodian fruit flies? Come on! Get to work, I want my shipment in by May!

Sorry, I'm sure you could use a good laugh.

 lljdma06!
Actually, if anyone in the US wants some I can supply starter cultures :hey:

how about canada when the bettas are ready for shipping ;) they seem really quick to culture and unlimited 'free' betta food is always great!

I'm sure I could ship to Canada too :)

Synirr,

I'm looking through that website you posted for your drosophila supplies, and I can't seem to find any foam inserts for the vials. Did you just get the vials with caps or did you get foam inserts for them? Also, which media did you purchase, the large container, or the one with enough for 300 vials, or the one with enough for 80 vials? Did you get the netting for the vials as well?

The extra vials I bought didn't come with foam inserts, but the fly cultures did. I've covered the new cultures with paper towels rubberbanded on until I can find a good substitute for the foam. Pretty sure I got the 80 vial bag of media, there's a ton of it. I'm using plastic canvas as netting, it gets the job done just as well and I already had it on hand :)

EDIT: Definitely go with the dry media if you're thinking of ordering some. It's cheaper and very easy to mix up, just add one part media to one part water and wait a minute for it to soak in.

Will you ship to australia? :hey: Lol probably not I might start a culture of them and vingear worms for when I'm breeding them just finished building my 150 big barracks.

I would if I could :p

The "anesthefly" solution from the link in my first post, but you can use ether too if you can get it.

They also had another thing that looked like a frozen petrie dish. You put the flies on that and it's cold enough to slow them down. So basically you can immobilize them without using any chemicals.

hey. I imagine there's free info on the net on making your own culturing media from home. Probably much cheaper than buying from the website. In fact, didn't someone post a link earlier in this discussion???

The problem with homemade medias is that they're more likely to mold and destroy all your developing maggots :/
The dry media is less than $5 for enough to make 80 vials

OHHHHH...well then it's definitely sensical to buy the premade one!
