I'm thinking of putting some cucumber in the tank, apparently rainbow fish like a bit of veg. Do I have to do anything to it, or can I just cut a slice and let it float?

never fed cucumber myself, but every time i've seen it in my LFS' tanks its sliced and just dropped in there

Thanks for the reply, just a bit concerned, as my rainbows are only about 2 and a half cm long at the moment, thought it might be a bit hard for them.

Hi. There is also a post in the Tropical Chit Chat section related to feeding fish cucumber that you might want to check out if you haven't already.

You can either just drop it straight in and let it float around or you can put it in hot water for a while and then allow it to cool down. This will then allow it to sink.

My fish love cucumber and I place the pieces in boiling water for a while before putting them in the tank. This helps the pieces to sink. If its a stubborn piece then I stick it in the sand :)

I also feed them zucchini and shelled peas.

I weight it down by attaching it to a rock or something.

Mine eat, cucumber, spinach, peas, there not too keen on lettuce though ( i here my Silver Dollars should love this, but they dont lol )

I usually, weight the cucumber piece down, and drop it in ;)

Thanks for all the replies, i cut a really thin slice and dropped it in, it whizzed around on the top for ages and the fish just hung around staring at it. So I left it in overnight and found it on the bottom in the morning untouched.

I think I will try weighing it down, like most of you suggested next time.

If you look on ebay, Item number: 7719081507 screwcumber you will find a nifty holder for your cucumber!

I just poke a plant weight through a slice and drop it in.

Emma

Likewise.

Personally, my rainbows have never bothered with it while I've been watching. It goes in for the plec (who devours it very fast).

That's good to know, as I've just bought a plec today, if the rainbows aren't interested well at least all is not lost, lol
