The life cycle is usually 1 to 2 weeks at 24-27C (Colorni, 1992). The time frame of the life cycle can vary slightly between different isolates or variants of Cryptocaryon irritans (Colorni & Burgess, 1997). No dormant stage has been found in any study of its life cycle to date. However, Cryptocaryon irritans tomonts have an asynchronous excystment (hatching) time of 3 to 28 days (Colorni, 1985).

Do you guys agree with this? This citation is obviously dated so I was wondering if anyone knew of anything more recent that contradicts this? I'm just curious because I'm waiting out adding fish to my tank. I'm wondering how long I should go fishless for. It's been 20 days thus far. Judging by this statement and past research I'm thinking that the parasite should perish after a month of not finding a host, correct? This is also assuming that past research still stands true in studies that show cryptocaryon irritans have no dormant stage.

Most people who choose this treatment leave the tank fishless for 6-8 weeks. Crypto is a hardy parasite and it's lifecycle can vary.

Agreed, came across the same information chrissy, hence I choose an 8week QT for my display tank when my fish had ich... Better to be safe than sorry I said

So I guess if I were to add fish before the end of that 8 weeks and they contracted white spot then the entire waiting period would have to be started over?
