Hi all,

so maybe about a week ago I noticed my male crowntail looking a little bloated. I gave him some pea and didn't feed him the next day. He still seemed bloated so I just started feeding him a single pellet in the mornings, skipping a day here and there. It hasn't gone down and if anything I think he may be even bigger by now. On top of that, I've noticed some discoloring in his head. His head is normally a mottled coppery color in relation to his blue body, but I've noticed that in some spots, particularly around his gills, it seems to have become more red/brown and also has extended down his spine just a little past the head. There's also a spot of brown in his eye that I never noticed before. Behaviorally, he seems normal though sometimes I see him opening and closing his mouth repeatedly. I've been keeping an eye out for raised scales but I don't think they are.

I moved him from a 1.5 gal tank (horrible, horrible owner-me, I know) about two weeks ago to a 10-12 gal (person I got it from said it was 14, so it might be, but it seems smaller than that to me). The sponge filters the guy was using were still moist and had good bacteria and all that. He definitely seems more active in the bigger tank but he hasn't built any bubble nests since the move, which he usually had them up again a few days after a water change. I've been changing 1-2 gallons of water every few days, and running the filter several times a day (I don't like to leave it on all the time since he struggles with the current.) I'm going out to get a testing kit tomorrow. Since I never used testing before and he was fine, I just figured it would be ok being the horrible owner I am, (plus I'm still dependent on my parents for transportation so it's hard to get out to buy stuff sometimes) but I'll test the levels and see if there's something there I can fix.

Anyways, if anyone can give some input on what I can do to help the little guy get better, or any medications that actually work, please let me know.

my bettas get bloated sometimes. i try not to worry as long as they don't float. try using flake food or frozen food (not freeze dried i was just told that that causes bloating) try feeding every other day or every two days. every day look from the top to make sure he doesent have dropsy :)sick:) as for the spots-??. and i dont think you are a bad owner for having him in a 1.5 gal, thats what size mine is in and he is happy and made a big bubble nest! personally i think it is silly to have a betta in a 10 gal (i would use it for more fish) :D. i think people forget that wild bettas live in puddles.. but they do deserve something better than a bowl. anyways... i need to stop rambling on..

Hey, thanks for replying. :) I'm keeping a look out for dropsy, I'm really hoping that's not the case.

Just to let you know, the myth that wild bettas live in puddles is just that - a myth. Bettas naturally live in paddy fields which you can see, although shallow are quite large. The whole puddle idea came from the fact that during dry season, the fields can dry up, leaving small amounts of water for the betta to live in, but this is not the norm. The fact that they CAN live in such conditions, doesn't mean they should.

Speaking of those paddy fields, I have been searching for actual pictures of bettas in the wild, in one of those paddys. I think it would be quite neat :D
