Hi i was just wondering if it is possible to cross breed platies. We have coffee platies and red tuxedo platies in the same tank and one of our female coffee platies had 3 fry one of which looks like half it's body is a slight orange colour, whereas the other 2 look just like the mother. Then one of our red tuxedo platies gave birth to 1 baby and it's got all the colouration of the mother but instead of having fully black tail it has a dotted black tail like the coffee platies. Is it possible they have been cross bred ?

yes, platies can interbreed, they are the same species, just like dogs can interbreed, the babies will take characteristics of both parents.

ah thanks , thats totally weird to think that lol. But quite interesting thanks. Are they now a whole different species or do we just call them a coffee red tuxedo cross?

well, the different colours arent different species, they just are different variations.

I have mixed fry in the fry tank, orange mickey mouse, but has the spots of the white spotted male to name but a few.quite cute really.most livebearers can hold sperm from other males for up to 6 months,so you may end up with variety of colours.

Had another question actually , Can baby fry have fry? One of my month old platies looks pregnant somehow, dunno if she is or if she just ate too much but is it possible?

well if it is fully developed and is past 4 weeks and u can tell its a female, then yes it may be pregnant

Although bare in mine if they do give birth at this age the fry will most likely not survive and there wont be many of them, the fish may also die to due to being a young age and just to much for it to handle.

At a month old the young fish would not be fully developed enough to produce eggs. So no it's just a greedy fish.

at about 2-3 months they can start to develop eggs and become pregnant, however this will take nuterants way from the still growing fish and cause problems later. if you can remove males away from young females you will always get larger and healthier fish as a result.

i have 1 month and 6 days old molly fry,
they are still at the devloping stage,
some born with deformitys are still dying one by one.
And now at this stage tey are just stabel and big enought to save their lives.
I don't think they will think about family planning thins time!
