Ok, so I have a 55G tank with a female 5 1/2 inch JD on one side of the divider and a full grown male Albino convict (about 5 inches) on the other side. The two are always trying to fight through the divider. Every once in a while I'll let the divider down and let the two swim around together to see if they might pair off on have fry. But, they just seem to just fight and lock lips. So last night my JD layed about 300-500 eggs on one of the rocks. I let the divider down to see what would happen. The JD would turn her side to the convict and shake her body around. All the convict would do was flare his gills at her. Once she stoped doing that they would lock lips and push eachother back and forth. So I just spreated them. What could I do to get these fish to cross breed. Just a little time or sometimes they just don't like eachother. Any advise would be greatly appeciated. Will post pics of the two later today

I have a breeding pair of convicts htat I bought already established. When I put them in the 10 gallon hospital jsut until a 55 finished cycling (which was alittle over a week, so not to long), they locked lips a bit. When I moved them into the 55, the male and female seemed to have forgotten each othr a bit, so they wold fight constantly. Well after a few days of liplocking and flaring they are now a pair again I think that the pair is establishing itself. She is testing how strong he is and he is showing her how tough he is. I don't know if this is the case for you, but she probably laid the eggs so that the male can fertilize them. Let him flare and liplock her, but just keep an eye on it. If one is getting beat up too badly then put the divider back in. Sometimes establishing the pair can be more violent than anything i've seen.

Good luck with it, and i hope it works out for ya!!!

Some fish just aren't compatible... might try another male convict?

They fought today for about 30 minutes. Both their lis are pretty tore up but for the most part there ok. All they do when there together is lock lips and push eachother back and forth.

Its there was of saying they dont want to cross, I had the same thing happen with a female FH and male texas.

yea, perhaps try a different male or something. that might work. cichlids are for the most part monogomous and like ot keep with the same mate for life so it could take some time. finding a male that likes her and she likes him. good luck though.

ive had a full grown texas/convict male for the past few months (200mm), very aggressive, nutty and a menace. ive had 2 buy a setup just for him because he's such a pain. i recently got a part time job on the side at a local fish shop and me boss there gave me a 100mm albino golden convict. shes albino with a sick looking gold on her looks great. anyway these two did the whole scrap it out thing. he normaly kills anything (turtles, freshwater crayfish and many other cichlids) but he ended up pairing with her which shocked me and theyve got there nest ready. so a texas albino gold convict X breed should be the result?

will keep ya posted

i have got a full grown male texas/convict. when he's angry his convict stripes come out mean as, and when hes just cruisen around he kinda just goes grey, but in between the stripes are the texas colours. he recently paird with an golden albino convict.

Post pics please I have only ever seen a true albino convict once.

when my fish go to breed they always lock lips then lay eggs and firtilise them, if the male seems strong to the female she will let him fertilise the eggs, the whole process of breeding is letting the strong pass on their genes.... thats why most male animals will fight.

sweet keep us posted. im gonna try and X The Texas/convicts with a JD.....dunno if that will work but would be cool.
