We managed to aquire a free Rotastak Super Pod cage
http://www.armitages.co.uk/rotastak5.htm
(odd story, my nan's friend caught a mouse, wanted to keep it, bought this cage, next morning it had died, unsuprisingly).Having had a Habitrail before, I know how incredibly awful these things can be to clean, so while adding extra rooms won't be too bad, too many tubes are out. It's far too small for a Syrian hamster (AFAIK you can't upgrade the wheel, and it's not massively huge anyway), and I really don't know what the system is like for other things (mice, spiny mice, gerbils, dwarf hamsters etc.). And what additions would be needed for them. Just so you know, I've kept Robrovski hamsters, Syrian hamsters and mice. Any input?

hi,
lots of scope to extend, my daugher has lots of rotastack tubes/ add ons, we got for a good price on ebay,
she has 2 female gerbils in hers, and changes it around once a week. :)

im not exactly sure how big it but from what i saw you could do a teddybear hamster as long as you take it out and play with it and get an exercise wheel

I hope I don't pee you off  but that cage isn't really suitable for anything. Rotastak and Habitrail are notorious for low quality too small cages - they're not even suitable for a hamster (which you've said, I know). They have poor ventilation, are highly chewable and just generally poo. It's a shame because it's not your fault they market them for animals they're not suitable for, and it's fair that people would assume they'd be suitable for what they're sold for (but they're not :( ).

To be honest I'm struggling to think of a small enough animal to live in it - mice need more ventilation and would chew, and I *think* smaller hamster breeds are sociable creatures (unlike Syrians). I have a friend who is involved in rescue and who has a spiny mouse - will ask her if she can think of anything. :good:

S'alight, I'm not bothered  I didn't pay for it, some other person did then gave it away  I'll have a proper look at it later, although the ventilation isn't that bad as long as you don't only attatch it to all the enclosed plastic add-ons. It's mainly out of interest, we've got plenty of other cages lying around (a couple of large ones that are actually suitable for a hamster, a Rotostak really tall hell to clean one, a smaller verion of the hamster ones).

Ahaaa then there you go! I dunno - maybe it'd come in handy for something else? I once saw habitrail tubes used in a fish tank as decoration (LMAO, it's true, it was in this cack book).

Could you not mock up a large cage and use it as an add on. I know it would mean tubes but at least it would be used.
A couple of those little russian hamsters would love it.

I don't have enough room to set up one of the large cages, unfortunately, otherwise I might well have done already. My desk space is pretty limited with all the tanks on it. Smaller cages, mebbe, although from what I've kept, dwarf hamster and equally small things are pains to tame and catch.

I bought one of the basic ones of those as a quarentine for any hamster i bought. Mine managed to escape from it even though all the clips and that. He pushed it and the hole end caps opened and (i dont know how he survived) he had a massive red gash across the side of his face 2 inches long. I still have him today and he is my longest lived hamster :)

So yes, they are poo! :p

Gerbils nibble out of everything, well the two I had did, both the Habitrail and the Rotastak.

Dwarf hammies might be one option but they might be able to squeeze out of the bars on the triangluar(sp?) section. Mice might be a good idea also.

Try ebay for more sections as another member has recommended.

Good luck, hunting for your new critter.

Perhaps just use it for if one of your current rodents get ill or for whilst your cleaning them out. Other than that I cant think of anything else to put in it.

It is to small for ANY hamsters unless you are going to add on so ppl get that of your head. I don't think its good for anything unless you are willing to add on.

depending on how widely spaced the bars are, maybe you could try keeping a small lizard in it. like an anole or something. of course, in that instance, you'd have to scrub all the poo off everytime you cleaned it, so maybe that's a crap idea.
