ok so i decided after many months that since i got a new 20 gallon just for my guppies that i would buy some drift wood that they have at the petstore (petco) because it's already been soaked for a while and it would save me the hassle of boiling it and so on. so i got 2 nice pieces and a couple of live plants to put in too and brought them home. i rinse the drift wood in super hot water just in case it was carrying anything that the petstore's water would have in it. so i put it in and admired how nice it looked and while i was admiring i noticed a couple of snails, no big deal since i bought plants and that usually happens. then i saw something that looked like a slug... i looked closer, and it reached up in the air to grab onto something else.... it was a leech!!! i'm so positive because i've seen them on the animal planet channel and such. so i quickly grabbed my net and scooped him up with the gravel and flung him outside in the snow.... how GROSS is that?!?!  i hope there isn't anymore and has this happened to anyone else?!

A leech in plants? I've never heard of that before! It's a good thing you spotted him because just imagine what could've happened to one of your guppies!

Thats yuk.

My dad was in the Vietnam war and had leeches on him all the time from swamps in the jungle. He said they are very disgusting and stubborn things to come off.

Gross. Thankgod you caught him.

Ive had a few leech like things in my tank. Was the base of it round and had 1 long pointy thing, looks like its head? Also was its body really hard? And have little spikes/lumps on it? I still dont know wat it was. Mine was clear in colour and quite small. I found 3 a while ago, but seem to have gone now. I hope

That sounds more like hoverfly larvae than a leech, google image search 'rat tailed maggot' :good: .

I have to admit, seeing a leech in my tank would gross me out. However, what grosses me out more than the leech is that PETCO is getting things like this from their suppliers. Have you contacted PETCO to let them know what happened to you?

I advise all those who find leeches disgusting to never, ever go into the marine hobby.
What's the scoop with leeches and marine?

see i would let them know, but petco doesn't care about their customers... no one ever wants to help or take care of their fish for that matter, i only get accessories there.

thats disgusting good thing you put it snow and not your tank .

You guys should read the post of the guy who bought driftwood left it out of water for an hour put in an his unstocked tank a found a catfish swimming around!

Leeches are harmless to humans. It takes them almost 20 minutes before they start to pierce the skin after latching onto you. I highly doubt that a leech could catch a guppy, they normally feed on dead fish.

If you are still active on here, how big was the leech? Most fish eat leeches and they are a great food source.
