We spotted, along with goldfish, bullheads, carp, koi, bluegills, etc. in our pond on Sunday, a little crayfish. I am pretty sure that we saved his little life.
He had gone over a little mini-dam set up at the end of our pond that feeds into the lake down the hilll - and was stuck on his back laying on a large steel lip which was at the bottom of the dam door on the other side... water was rushing down on him and he was flailing around not able to flip over. Had he actually been able to flip himself over, he'd have fallen about 2 feet into the little bubbling churning vat of water below where he'd have slammed into several rocks and who knows what may have become of him.
We grabbed a stick, held it down for him to grab onto, and he clamped onto that stick. We lifted him back up over the pond, and almost as if he knew (maybe he did!) when to let go, he dropped just as we held him back over the pond. And I swear to the heavens above, he saluted us just before he scampered off under the leaves on the bottom of the pond.
