The substrate is a layer of First Layer Pure Laterite, with a layer of Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate mixed over it, and a layer of commercial grade medium sand 30 grit Quikrete over the top of that. It seems to work well, and I hope it solves the gas problem with the sand. (Along with my building community of Malasian Trumpets.) Cuts cost a bit.
