AFAIK, all non-marine crabs need dry land. Red claw crabs, as shown in the picture, definately need land, but also do much better in brackish water.

Hey, he's cool! What kinda crab is he? Don't want to get any until I can research properly as I've read that red claw crabs need dry land. Saw some in my LFS and the tank they were in was half full with lots of rocks sticking out the water and they were all sat on the rock.

Is he a Red Claw?

As Oohfeeshy said all fresh water crabs need dry land, (and redclaws are brackish really - to keep them happy and healthy). Also crabs and fish don't mix, unless you are willing to lose the odd fish; crabs do so much better in a species only tank, but you need to do some serious research, some crabs (like the rainbow crab) need mostly land and also get large, needing a good size tank. If you do decide to get crabs they are very interesting and great pets, but they do need specialised care.

the crabs are evil little bar stewards i had some in my tank and all they did was try to eat my fish/plants untill one escaped and one commited suicide ontop of the the light

I hear if you don't use protection and have many partners there is a possibility you could get crabs!!!!!!!!!!!!! heehee sorry couldn't resist!

On a serious note - are there any community crabs?

If you want an idea for crabs that dont need to go on land, go to aquariumfish.net and look on the side panel on the left and scroll down until you see Indexes. Then go to critters and look for freshwater crabs. Then you can find the crabs that are totally aquatic. Thought you might like to see this page. And anyone else, this page is awesome for getting info about fish and invertebrates as well as frogs.

Loko17 imo the info on crab at the site you suggested is incorrect - both types of crab they have said are fully aquatic aren't. They need land - they might keep them for quite a while without land, but they won't survive in the long term. As far as I know most fiddlers spend more time on land than in the water - and both types they have named as "freshwater" do much better in brackish as they are naturally from mangrove swamps.

Well the guy that writes the info for that site just writes from expereinces and I've emailed him on the subject and he said though they do better coming out of the water, they can live happily fully submerged for years and all the info I get from that site has been right so far so I'm sticking to my guns. You may be right but I'm thinking the guy on that sight has an idea about what he's talking about.

my dad and my cousin both have 2 red claw crabs each
none of them have ever killed or even bothered the other fish - i think it may be due to the large tank space, and the fact that all the fish are fast and/or large

they are very pleasant little things but do love to escape we had to tape up the wireholes- they do like to have dry land [but not essential] - my dads sits ontop of the filter (the top comes above surface) i love watching them eat fishflakes...they hold them in their little pincers XD
