I was wondering if crabs make good companions for bettas? The types I was looking at were rainbow crabs, fiddler crabs and hermit crabs. Or, what about shrimp? Or snails? Its just if I do get a betta, I don't want him to be on his lonesome.

Snails will be fine. As long as crabs don't pinch his fins they should be OK. Anyway, bettas aren't really too fussed about being on their lonesome... more food and attention!

Crabs are a bad pairing with bettas. they can shred your bettas fins in a hot second, causing disease or even death.

Snails are better, but make sure you get one that's too small to get your betta trapped in his trapdoor, and one that's big enough not to be eaten.

i wouldn't put a snail in an unfiltered tank though. They are very messy and will stink up your water within a few days! If your tank is filtered than there is no problem!

I had ramshorn snails in 3 of my betta tanks, and the snails refused to come out of their shells due to the bettas harrasment, so now I have a tank with nothing but those snails in it. Been thinking of getting a golden apple snail to go along with them. I saw a huge one at one of the lfs's around here (it was kinda freaky looking, but still cool), but I want to start small and watch him/her grow.
