I am thinking of adding a pair or trio of dwarf gouramis to my community tank but I am concerned about overstocking.

The sig is slightly out of date, I currently have

3 male guppies
2 platys
6 x-ray tetras
Bristlenose plec
About 3 Otos ( hard to tell in planted tank)
Many many cherry shrimps

I asked at lfs and they advised against, not because of the stocking but because they said gouramis would eat the shrimps!

Tank is mature (9 months) and only recent death is 1 platy about 3 weeks ago, apparently of old age.

the gouramis will get on fine with all the fish in the tank..
but im not sure how they do with shrimp since the gouramis tend to nip at anything that moves.

I don't think dwarf gouramis will eat the shrimp. Cherry shrimp breed quite well anyway, if you have a healthy population and a nicely planted tank, I don't think they'd eat too many if they did.

just a note, dwarfs are best kept 1male, 2 females. so a trio would be best

Thanks. Have added a trio today. The livebearers have been moved so the stocking is now

3 dwarf gouramis
6x-ray tetras
BN plec
otos
Cherry shrimp

Might add a few more tetras, maybe some brighter ones like cardinals. Then that will be it.
