I am about 2 weeks into a fishless cycle and the ammonia dropped to around 2ppm on Tuesday with no nitrites. It is still at 2ppm with no nitrites. Is this normal, therefore i need to dose it back to 5ppm and be patient? My initial cloudiness has almost gone but I seem to have inherited some white hairy substance all over everything. I touched the filter and heater (not the element) and it felt slimy. I have no idea what it is or how to get rid of it, so all help is appreciated.

Many thanks in advance :good:

General rule is nitrites take twice as long as the ammonia, you dont say what your ph and tank temp is?

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll do another test of everything tonight when I get home from work and post the results here as I can't remember off the top of my head.

Had problems with the internet last night but here's the results form the test

Temp 27`C/80`F
Ammonia 1.5mg/l
Nitrite 0.1mg/l
Nitrate 0mg/l
PH 8.0-8.5

Only have a broad range test in my Interpret Master Kit but have just received an API master kit so will do the high range test later as just leaving for London to go watch Brighton beat West Ham.

Looks like there is a bit of Nitrite now so maybe I was just being impatient, I'll dose up the ammonia and keep fingers crossed. PH seems to be quite high though to me!

pH is exactly where you want it in terms of what's best for the cycling period.

Raise the temperature to 30C.

Everything else looks fine.

Can you do a test for ammonia and nitrate on your tap water so we know what you're putting into your tank?

The white furry slimy stuff i had in my tank. Dont worry its just the bacteria, after the bacteria bloom (cloudiness). It will go in a few days.

Steve

Stick with it, you'll get there in the end! :)

I wouldn't worry about the pH, it should sort itself out once your cycle is done. It's not going to make a difference at the moment :good:
