Hi All,

Got a problem with a friends platy.

Woke this morning to find a "cotton wool" like growth over 1 of his pelvic fins.

Unfortunatly my camera isn't working, and whilst this is quite embarrising to do (!), i have draw on a diagram to help explain what I mean.

I think it 'columinus' or what ever its called, but need to check as I'm worried about his tanksmates.

Thanks in advanced.

You sure its not white spot?

Ok you need to treat it's columnaris, turn temp down by two degrees and add myxazin and pimafix to the tank.

In canada at mo, and all i could get was the capsuals that counter act certain illness' & turn the water green. I've removed the platy and placed in a isolation tank.

Thought give hime 5 days or so and see how he does.. just hope it hasn't spread. :/

Is someone looking after the tank for you.

If you're in Canada, get some Maracyn & Maracyn II. This will deal with columnaris. A Quar tank would be a good idea, no sense in medicating a well fish, and you will use less meds. Remed daily with a 50% water change, don't worry about a cycled filter, as the daily water changes will help with that. A good size Rubbermaid bin can be used in a pinch as a quar/med tank, as long as it holds a couple of gallons.

Maracyn & Maracyn II aren't available in the UK as far as I know. If it were me, I'd buy the large package, and forget to leave the leftovers at mom's. :)

K cool. Though already got the meds but not the one suggested as I bought them before I got responce.

I thought best to treat the whole tank, as this desease can spread un-notised(?).

The sick dude is in a make shift 1 G bowl with plants, areation, and also med water from main tank.

To be honest, and I don't wanna sound hash, I'm more interested in keeping the others alive...

..sorry if that offends anyone.

As at present, the meds have been in about 6 hours, the fish in iso for 5, and all seems ok.

wait n see i guess.....

The 1g should work for a single platy, just keep an eye on the other fish, increasing water changes is good preventave medicine. By medicating well fish you risk developing resistant strains of diseases, these are tough to beat.

Often fish develop a disease due to stress, it wears down their immune system. Most bad bacteria is water borne, that's where water changes help. The weakest fish will generally show signs of disease first, if you have too many male platys to females, or other fish that harrass this fish that could be the reason.
