Hi kamikazepanda and welcome to the forum :hi:

It sounds to me like you're just starting out with fish and are looking for some very basic information. That's good!

There are a lot of very friendly fish folks on this forum who just love helping newbies get started in the hobby. There is a lot to learn and this is just the place to do it! :D

If you are just starting, and don't have fish yet, take your time, ask all the questions you want and learn as much as you can before you spend your money. This will help you get things right the first time and makes it better for you, and for the fish, too.

It would help, however, if we knew a little about you and what you have in mind. Do you live in the US, the UK or somewhere else? Are you on a budget or is money no object? Do you have any idea what kind of fish you want, or are you open to suggestions? :dunno:

Im going to go on the assumption that you live in the states. You can get a complete 29g setup at wal-mart for roughly 80 bucks. Stnd not included though. Its fine to buy your supplies there but please DO NOT get any of their fish. A little research on this forum will give ya all you need to know about wal-mart fish. HTH

plan on saving up at least $250..that way you know for sure you can get EVERYTHING. and have a bit extra in the fish fund, for watertreatments, food, fish, n stuff

It is not stupid at all...in fact I bet by doing this you will save yourself some money and heartache. I have to agree with Redneck...I mean Knucklehead on price. BUT if you are new to keeping fish I would suggest starting off with cheap fish. As your learning curve improves then move on to more expensive stuff. And again DO NOT buy Wal-Mart fish. Good fish to start with are usually Guppies, swordtails, platies, mollies, and cory cats. Glad to have you aboard. IF you stick with beginner fish for the tank they will cost you about $50-$100. You can save yourself some money and have yourself some fun IF you buy just one or two males/females of the fish I said above. Except for cory cats the rest are PROLIFIC breeders and will fill your tank up in no time. Enjoy.

Often where I live (South England) you can find some cheap aquariums, filters, lights etc. in the free ads papers which save you a lot of money.

You're absolutely right, edd_hardy! :)

Fishkeeping can be a very expensive hobby, but it need not be. Most of my equipment is used, but it's every bit as good as if I had bought it new.

The trick to saving money is in knowing where to cut corners and where not to. That's where the advice of the forum members is so helpful!
