I heard that the aquarium stress relieving salt is bad for corys. Is this true? If not is it bad for plecos?
What is the reason for the aquarium salt being bad for corys?

Thanks, my tetras are being nippy.

Tetras can be quite nippy though, is your water chemistry fine? What species are they?

It is not harmful to most cories, plecos, etc. It could be to wild caught individuals, but the average cory is fine with salt treatments. Same goes for tetras, angels, discus, etc.

Salt may help the symptom, but you need to fix the problem. Tetras should not be nippy, definitely not enough to stress anything out.

may i suggest that you up your numbers or tetras if you have the space, most likely the schools arent big enough. IME most tetras can get quite nippy when they are not in groups of 6+

There are 6 of my serpae tetras. I suppose this post shouldn't be in corys lol.
General Hardness: 40 ppm
Carbonate Hardness: 40 ppm
Ph: 6.8
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: about 5 ppm
Ammonia: about .25 ppm

i was going to ask if they are serpae's or red eye's so i was right on my first guess, they are a nippy little tetra when they start to mature, you could up the numbers if you have the space, but i dont know if it will work, certainly didnt work for me and my tiger barbs, ok, different species of fish but same tactic :)

dont add salt to a tank with corys in it, full stop, its bad for them.

if you have a reading of ammonia in there, then you need to sort that out first of all, i suggest a decent water change with a reading that high, 75% would be a good start.

We added some fish a little under a week ago so I was expecting the ammonia to be a little higher than usual.
I didn't use salt. I was just wondering because I have read in some places that it was bad.
The tap water conditioner we sometimes use also is supposed to reduce stress. Would that be bad for corys also?

All you need to do are some water changes, good quality water = reduced stress levels

Adding new fish should not cause an increase in ammonia levels, (if you have been sensible in the amount of fish you have added). If you expected higher ammonia levels why havnt you taken steps to reduce it already?

water changes = win

DO NOT use salt where corys are concerned, they do not tolerate it at all well!
