Anyone ever kept or keep Corydoras melanistius? The LFS I go to might be able to get me some. I looked on planet catfish as usual and they have great pictures, but not a lot of info. Are they hard to keep, do they spawn in home tanks, stuff like that.

Thanks

Hi Barracuda518 :)

I have several species of fish that I bought at the lfs, and they were all called C. melanistius. I think I do have some, and the others are also very attractive. Because of this confusion, I never tried taking them out of the cory community to condition and try to breed them.

They can be bred in a home aquarium though. Here's an article by someone who did it:

Hey Inchworm,

I figured you had some of these. Have you had any trouble with them? Are the really sensitive? The ones he will get will be a decent size and not really young, so they should be strong.

Hi Barracuda518 :)

It sounds like they might be wild caught fish. In that case they might have problems adjusting to local water and recovering from the trip from their river to the store. Give them a good looking over and quarantine them if possible. If they look a little shaky in the lfs, wait a week before buying them and see how they do first. :D

we stock these at work and I can honestly say not 1 of them have ever died. I'ved been ordering about 30-40 each time for the past few months and there a very nice cory. the ones I get in are a nice chunky 1".

Hi Barracuda518 :)

If they are healthy and in good condition, they should do very well for you.

They are a stocky fish that have great color and pattern. I hope you get them. :D

They are supposed to get them in next Tuesday. Im going to look at them then and wait a couple of days before I buy any to make sure they are healthy. I will get some if everything looks good

I think you should wait and get a selection of aeneus schools: a gold, a green, etc. Well, at least that's what I'm planning to do. AB has a good selection of green and gold offered. BetterBettaUSA has a nice selection of melanotaetaenia. Gorgeous gold fishy from the pics. My LFS has a nice selection of green and gold. I think a tank of a variety of shades of aeneus would be stricking. Of course who knows what the spawns would be, I guess? :*)

I bought some of those a while back. I lost some and then bought some at a different LFS that were just sold as spoted corys. I can't remember what the scientific name of those was but it was different. I think there are several species sold as spotted corys. That one store is the only one around here that ever had the melanistius so I'm not sure if that is what they really were or not. They looked identical to the ones I got from the other store which have fared much better. Maybe those are wild caught which would help explain why I lost all of the but one (may have lost him too as I added 5 more and then lost one which could have been the one remaining melanistius). They really are pretty fish though and much more active than my peppered corys.

Yeah, I have 4 peppered cories and they do not seem as active as all the other cories. I like the way they look though. I will take a good look at the C. Melanistius they get to see if they are real thing or just spotted cories. Either way, I think I will get some if they are healthy.

EDIT: Spelling

Your link to the punctatus pictures exactly what I have. Planet catfish's pics were nothing like this. I gave up looking for their species. There must be some varieties or species that are different. Something is wrong. I don't have time to research this for a week or two.

Here are a few more that resemble C. melanistius, the C. brevirotsis and the C. delphax:

I picked some up yesterday. I can not tell if they are C. melanistius or C. delphax. They look very similiar. They are really big, might even be full grown. I tried to get 1 female and 3 males and I think I was able to. Hopefully they will spawn so I can have smaller ones. They look like giants when they are schooling with my other cories

Hi Barracuda518 :)

Congratulations on your new corys! Aren't corys addictive?

Can you post some pictures of them?
