Hi,
my lfs are selling some corydoras eques (equus), they look similar to C.aenas but have a gold spot. Does anyone have any info on them, I think they may be quite rare,
Thanks

This is a picture of the true Corydoras eques.

Most if not all of the fish exported as Corydoras eques turn out to be a colour form of Corydoras aeneus. The true Corydoras eques is unmistakable as you can see from the picture.

It seems to me that Barracuda was looking for an ID on a group of aeneus from his lps with a gold spot on its head. PM him; he might be interested in the fish. But so far he has not gotten a confirmed ID on his fish other than it is most probably a C. aeneus strain which he concurred with. It is rare in the aspect that not many have seen them with the gold spot, but not a rare species if it is indeed a C. aeneus.

Well, just a thought. Ian can correct me if I am off base.

That's another lovely fish Ian!

The problem with the so-called "aeneus" group is there appears to be a variant in every major river system from Colombia to Argentina, many of these are considered to be distinct species, but without seeing a picture of the fish that Supersalmon saw in the lfs I would be impossible to say what species they are. I posted the C. eques picture because many exporters try and pass of varieties of C. aeneus as that fish. The chances are that the fish in the lfs were probably C sp venezuelanus which does indeed have a large orange/red shoulder blotch.

Well those are lovely too, and anyone can pass them off to me anytime!

Yes those aeneus are very prolific! Little darlins!

Hi again,
Sorry I cant get a picture, but they have a short gold line rather than a spot just above the top of the bronze area into the head. They do lookm like a variaint of aeneus to me, Thanks

I talked to Ian about those a while back and we decided they were C. aeneus "Trinidad". But, like everyone says, I will never know what they actually are, because I have no idea where they came from. I do know they are some form of C. aeneus.
