Cory w/o barbels

Yes, as long as they're in good water conditions with the proper substrate (rounded gravel or sand) they should grow back.

As parker313 mentioned the barbels will grow back if the fish is kept in sutibleconditions. As varied diet, with good quality food is also essential if you want your cory to make a full recovery

Be on the look out for any problems with the fish, such as ulcers and other nasties since the fish will be weakend due to the injury.

I hope your cory makes a full and promp recovery

my barbel-less-cory died. :( I'm not sure whether this was due to the stress of being bought, or from infection from having no barbels, or what. either way...keep a close eye on him. good luck. :)

Hi heresmike :)

Perhaps the major cause of lost barbels among corys is damage due to bacterial infections.

Please keep a close watch on your new fish to be sure that if this was the case, that it is not an active infection. If so, be prepared to medicate him immediately to control and cure it.

There's also some research evidence that corys' barbels can be damaged by high nitrAte so keep it as low as possible. :)

one of our pandas lost its barbles overnight... I think it may have been during feeding due to our clown loaches...

anyway

They are starting to grow back now :)

Thanks all for the replies. I thought I read at one time that barbels do not grow back.... It's good to hear otherwise. They are all in quarantine, so I'll keep a close eye on them for other problems and/or recovery progress. :)

yeah i also noticed on one of my pandas that its barbels are gone. i thought it might have been from grubbing about in the gravel (even though its fine, rounded gravel). is any medication necessary for them to grow back? or should i just keep the water in top condition?

As mentioned before, top quality water and a varied diet

Hope it gets better soon

Hi -cAtFiSh- :)

It would be a good idea to keep an eye on your little cory to be sure he is able to eat. Since they use their barbels to sift through the gravel in search of little bits of food, if he has none he might be getting less than he needs. Perhaps a little extra attention, and food, at mealtime will make a big difference for him. :D

he still seems to be able to eat fine. i just put some algae wafer in the tank and he was the first one to find it and he seems to be having no trouble with it.
