I have, unfortunately, only one cory in my tank right now. It's a corydoras reticulatus, and I want to get him some friends. When I got him from my LFS, he was in a tank ambiguously marked "leopard cory." I don't really think I'll be able to easily or quickly find more C. reticulatus, so I'm wondering if I could use some similar species instead? Would he school just as easily with, say, corydoras julii or corydoras leopardus? They're pretty similar.... :/

If not, I can always try to order a couple of the right species from my LFS; I'm quite sure they'd be able to get me the right kind.

Lemme know what you think!

I think they school but not sure. Just recently bought 2 tiny peppered corys and 1 bronze cory who seem to stick together.

In the absense of their own kind, they'll school with anything. (and I mean anything - one of mine schooled with zebra danios when her friends were taken out!)

So...will my cory be just as happy with a similar species, or is it more of a "Plan B"...I want to do the best I can for him, but it'd be nice if that didn't involve a lot of work! :D

I was under the impression that the differing sorts would schoal, however I've found through experience that they don't. They will get along fine but they will stick with their own kind. I have three differing types, 2 groups of three and one individual and they do not schoal.

In response to the above question, he will be fine with other types. It really depends on your preference, if you like the look of a 6 or 7 strong schoal moving around together then get the same sort, if not just get similar ones for a bit of variety.

Yeah he'll be cool with others. When one of my Mateas died I was left with 2 Adolphis, 2 Harold Shultzis and 1 Matea, he schools with them all

We have 4 different types of cory in our tank, and they do well with each other. Although I do notice the two spotted ones stick together more and the bronze and albino tend to hang together more too... maybe because they are similar in coloration to each other, I dunno. But they all get along well.
