Yesterday, I bought three false-bandit cories. I was wondering if anyone can help me determine if they're females or males. I know that females are fatter and males are slimmer, but I can't seem to tell the difference between them. :/

Here are some individual pics of them . . .

Actually, it might be easier to tell if you look at them from above. Or, you can try to take some pictures from above to get opinions here?

Hi Sasha :)

Those are some nice looking C. melinis and I think you will enjoy owning them.

It's difficult to judge the sex of corys from the angle you've taken the pictures at because it leaves little room to make comparisons between them. If I had to make an educated guess from these pictures, I'd say the first is probably a female, the second might be a female and the third is probably a male.

If you can get a picture of all three together, taken from above, the chances of identifying them would be greatly increased. Perhaps you might try putting them in a shallow bowl or something similar for their photo. :D

Sorry to butt in here but how can you tell the difference between these and cory. metae?

I would think these are Corydoras metae.

Just a wild guess, two females and one male? :hyper: An absolute wild guess.

As mentioned by the peeps, one way would be to look at them from the top alternatively, you could check the ventral fins too.
Rounded for females and sharp for males.

Ooops! :*)

Philtre is right. They are C. metae "bandit corys," not C. melini, "false bandits."
