Hi everybody. I'm new to this forum. I hope you can advise me as I have been raising my cory fry for so long I would hate to lose them now!

My bronze cories laid eggs which I have hatched and raised in a small tank in 8 litres of water. Fry are now 7 weeks old and about half an inch long. For the past weeek I have been adding a bit of water from the main tank every other day to acclimatise them to the water chemistry. I have also been slowly increasing the depth of the water, removing about 2 litres and replacing it with 3 litres. I am worried about the depth of the main tank and whether they will cope. It is a Juwell Rio 125 and is about 50cm deep. The tank they are in is less than half this. I know they have to get to the surface to gulp air and I'm worried they won't make it. Also it's hard to judge whether they could still be sucked into the Rio's filter (the one supplied with the tank) as they are long but not very wide. I am going on hols in three weeks and no-one will be able to look after the nursery tank to the extent of changing water etc, so it's a bit of a dilemma what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Yvonne

Maybe you could put them in a net breeder so they are close to the surface

thanks for the suggestions. I am away for 11 days so I am worried about pollution building up if I leave them in the small tank. Would a plec wafer pollute the water? I do have a small net that fixes on the top of the big tank. It is a very fine mesh - would waste build up inside the net if they were fed in there? The person who will be calling in to feed the fish is not a fishkeeper so I need to keep it as simple as possible. :-( I shall be putting food into measured packages so they are not overfed.

thanks for a great forum by the way. I'm impressed by how friendly you all are. Perhaps cory keepers are all nice people! :D

Hi Yvonne,

A couple of questions, a) what is the surface area of the tank the fry are in at the moment. b) approximately how many fry are there.

It is possible thst the container you have them in now will be OK. I would keep the depth of water to about 4 inches and add a couple of small sponge filters, 3 weeks will be enough time for them to get established, especially if you are using water from the main tank. Regarding feeding the fry while you are away I would NOT. What I would do is take one of the upper section sponges from the Rio's filter and squeeze out all the residue that has built up in there, this will be full of micro organisms that will keep the fry sustained for up to two may be even three weeks.

Having someone else feed your fish, unless they are an established fish keeper is unwise. If you have to,I would have then give food every third day and set out the measure as you would normally feed at one sitting. I have just spent ten days away from my fish and they had just two feeds in that time and all were perfectly ok. The fry tanks were not given any food at all during that time and they survived perfectly OK on the filter residue.

Thanks Ian - that sounds promising.

I have four fry (lost about 15 others after a week, over the space of two or three days - no idea why) who are now a good half inch long. the tank is 7.5 inches by 12.5 inches, i.e surface area about 94 inches. I have had a fluval one internal filter (old style) in there since the third week, initially with a net over the grills. This week I took the net off as fry are too big to be sucked in. The sponges in there had been in the Rio filter for months - on reserve for emergency hospital tank duty when needed, so they are very mature. If I leave the fluval filter in there, will it suck in the micro-organisms you're talking about? would it be worth cutting a bit off the sponge and putting it in the tank?

Regards feeding the others whilst I am away - no choice I'm afraid. No friends or rellies who are fishkeepers. What i did last year was got one of those pill boxes marked with the days of the week, and put a measured amount of food in three compartments matching the days I wanted the fish fed. Worked really well - although my mum admitted she was worried they might still be hungry as there was so little food! I gave her a stern lecture about not being tempted to give them more.

Thanks for your help so far.
