Cory Fry . . Updated

I've had just 3 hatch. 2 lived for just over a week and the other one died the same day as it hatched.

It's early days for my lot though. There's only 3 out of the 9 that I'd call fully mature the rest vary in ages but they are all less than a year old.

I've currently got a platy dropping as I type and I actually saw a peppered cory eat one of the fry - that's the first time ever that I've seen that and there's been a LOT of platy fry born in that tank

The new eggs hatched yesterday, did a rough count & there are about 12 tiny corys, there are probably more as they're very hard to see.
Couldn't believe my eyes when I looked in the tank this morning, there are yet more eggs, again in the same place!
Is this normal for corys to lay a succession of eggs over a couple of weeks, or do I just have randy ones?
There was a thunderstorm yesterday, so that could've set them off again

Thank you.
I hope they stop soon, at this rate I'll have loads of babies

well I came home from work to 2 small dots on the back wall of the tank. On closer inspection it looked like they'd been eggs but had been pecked at :(

My peppered seem to lay just 2 eggs at a time and they like to hide them. At this rate I'm on a losing streak. It will be better if I can get my bronzes going.

Good luck with your fry Cazgar :)

The latest eggs hatched today, so I have more tiny babies wiggling about.
The oldest fry are now 2 weeks old & tiny miniatures of the parents.
They've got colour now, & if they still for long enough I can see their little barbels.
I reckon there must be at least a dozen of the older ones, & probably the same number of the other 2 hatchings.
I'll try & get a short vid tomorrow when the light's better, as I've been keeping the tank lights off in case they were light sensitive

ooh congrats hun :D

I've still got my peppered looking good for laying and I think they've layed a few recently but they're laying them in well hidden spots and by the time I see anything they look like they've been eaten :(

I'm beginning to think it's not going to happen for me :(

I'm sure they'll get the hang of it for you eventually, then you'll have lots of babies :)
This is the best I could do for a video, you can see one of the adults in it too

Managed to get a better video of them today, they've grown alot

wow, they have grown havn't they :D

I'm very very jealous

They don't hide as much now either.
I'd just given them some decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, so was a good time to try & get a vid
Shame I won't be able to keep them all, they're so cute

I guess that's the downside to breeding when you can't keep them all. I felt the same with my first lot of platy fry - I've kept 3 females out of the 15 that were born. I've got used to giving them away now but every now and then I get a really cute one and I so want to keep it. It hard then to force myself to let it go.

I just hope I can get to experience raising some cory fry beyond a week. I've bought a 30 litre tank today for fry. I'm considering putting the peppered cories in there once the platy fry are big enough to go and then if they lay eggs in there I can just take out the parents and let the eggs hatch without the worry of them getting eaten

We shall see though. Keep the video's coming though, I love watching them :)

I've no experience with peppers breeding, come to that I'd no experience with cory breeding at all, just lucky these eggs hatched, & the babies are doing well so far
Sounds like for the peppers you do need to remove the parents as soon as you see eggs if they're eating them.
Never thought I'd get so attached to & excited by fish, this hobby is addictive
Look forward to seeing your vids too very soon :)

the problem with the peppered, from what I can gather anyway, is that they tend to only lay a couple of eggs and then not lay any for ages and then lay another 2.

So far I've had the two that hatched and lived for a week or so. Then from the next 2, one went furry the other hatched and died the same day and the last 2 eggs went furry aswell.

There are marks on the glass at the back of the tank near my filter box that suggest there's been another 2 eggs recently but no actual egg so I can only presume they were eaten - probably by a platy.

I think the only way I'm going to get any more to hatch now is to either spot the female laying the eggs and remove them there and then or to move all four peppered into this spare tank until they lay some eggs and move em back to the main tank. It seems the only way to safe guard the eggs :dunno:

My bronzes are trying to spawn but I'm yet to find any eggs. Apparently they lay quite a few at once so if I can get them spawning I may have a better chance at raising the fry :)

You've done well though, leaving them in with the parents was a risk but it seems to have paid off :good:
