I have about 40, two week old Trilineatus fry,in a large plastic mesh household sieve, where they hatched, and which is in the adults tank.
I'm feeding them on Walter worms,Micro worms and Tetramin baby and they seem to be growing well, although i've never had any fry before to compare them with.
Although the sieve holes are very small some of the food invariably falls through the holes.
I'm loathed to move them to something different incase this causes problems but would appreciate some advice. Should i leave them where they are until they get bigger, Put them in a fry net, A small tub in the parent tank, or try to set up a small tank solely for them. Thanks in advance for any advice.

they will benefit from a substrate preferably sand as bacteria can build up on a bare bottom tank or sieve.... this can cause problems. what i would do is to put them in their own small tank with clean sand and use water from the parents tank. they will need daily water changes and feeding 2x a day and should grow well on what your feeding them. they dont grow fast compared to some species of fish, mine seem to be roughly about an inch in about 3 months or so.
good luck with them, im sure you will be fine as i find the hardest bit is keeping them alive for the first 3/4 weeks after this i dont seem to lose many at all :good:

Thanks for the quick reply. How big should the water changes be, is it better to give them fresh water at the water change or from the parent tank. Do i need to buy a small filter for the tank or are the water changes sufficient, thanks again.

I have a mini elite filter in my fry tank and put mature media in there from my main tank,i also put a stocking over the inlet and had the filter turned down to the lowest setting.

Most put a sponge filter in that runs off an airpump, but you will need to keep an eye on the stats, its surprising how they build up from feeding the fry.

I do a 40% w/c daily with clean dechlorinated water & temp match, and clean the sand with a piece of airline to suck up left overs and any debris that sticks to the bottom.

Some use water from the parent tanks, its up to you really.

agree with harlequins here. i do find that while the fry are younger they benefit from tank water from the parents tank, i dont know if its just me but i find more survive this way while they are still very young and fragile.
