Well i bought 4 cory's yesterday 2x pepper, 1x albino, 1x bronze.

i did all the stuff that you are supposed to do, and then realesed them after an hour, i woke up this morning and the bronze had died, :rip:

the other 3 are fine, feeding and swimming, so that is the first fish i have lost in my new setup, i guess it won't be the last....

Sorry R.I.P.

You left them in the bag for an hour?
I've never left them anywhere near that long.

is the tank cycled....if not then this is possibly the problem. if not then it was just really stressed out and couldnt take it.....i had the same problem with ottos a while back....i killed like 7 or so just to get my poor loner at the time 2 friends.

also an hour in the bag is not a problem, mine stay there that long for getting the temp right & also putting own tank water in the bag so as not to cause ph shock if there is a difference from shop to tank. think as long as bag is open that is fine. ( if i'm wrong pls correct me as i'm still learning as well :D ) if your tank is cycled then i would say that it just got to stressed & couldn't cope with it. sorry bout your loss thou :rip:

Yes the tank is cycled, i has been running for well over 2 months (almost 3 months), and my test kits indicate everything is fine, i have only just started adding fish, and each time i test before and after, so far there has been fish in the tank for 2 weeks, and not so much as a change in the test excepy nitrate went upto 10....

Hi...

that is exactly the same thing that i do.

i float for 30 mins to get the same temps, then open the bag and add tank water to the bag every 5 mins for 25 mins then release the fish....

nitrAte is not a problem as long as it doesn't go over 4oppm from what i know, so guessing it was either stress or was already weak. still hurts when you lose fish thou i know i always feel gulity in case it was something i did wrong

Same here. It's the only way to properly release fish. As soon as I open the bag and start floating it, I take a sample of the bag water and of my tank water and test the pH so I know how much of an adjustment they it's going to be. If the pH of the 2 is the same, I usually just float the bag for 15 to 20 minutes to let the temperature stabalize and then release them. If there's a big difference, I add water every 10 minutes till I get it where I want it. If the bag fills up, I pour some off and add more. When I bought my angels, the bag pH was 6.0 or lower (lowest reading on test kit). Tank pH was 7.0. I spent 3 hours adding water every 10 minutes to get the pH raised enough to release them. That was 6 months ago and they are all still doing great.

I lost a cory the last time I bought them. He was dead when we got home which is only a 20 minute drive (actually was still barely breathing but too far gone). I think a lot of the problem is that the employees don't know how to properly net them (not trashing LFS/LPS employees but a lot of times this is the case), especially at the chain pet stores like Petsmart, Petco. They end up pinching them against the side of the tank or something likt that. The tank these were in was so crowded with corys (2 different species) and tetras that he had a hard time getting them. I didn't see him hurt any but I feel sure that's what happened since there were no sick or injured fish in the tank (at least I hadn't seen any or I wouldn't have bought any).

Moving your fish and releasing them into the aquarium is one of the most stressful times of their lives (the other being shipped to the LFS) and I think you've just gotta accept that these things happen sometimes although it's sad - One of my Torpedo Barbs died on the journey home even though the otherwise were fine.

If your other corys are ok then there's probably nothing you've done wrong.

When I buy fish I transport them in a dark bag and then turn off the lights before you float the bag in the tank. I usually float the bag for about 1/2 an hour and then add water from the aquarium over a VERY long time - sometimes well over 3 hours lol (my corys the other day were searching for food and swimming up and down in the bag eventually).

If your shop has the facilities then ask them to put oxygen into the bag as this helps, as does a large bag (I think that way too many fish shops sell their fish in bags that are too small).

As rdd1952 said, many lfs workers just don't bag fish properly - I think this was the case with my barbs. However, when I bought my corys recently they kindly double bagged the fish and taped up the corners (I guess this prevents the fish getting stuck).

I think that is a problem as I have had them get stuck in the corners. I usually lay the bag flat on the way home rather than standing it up. Seems they have a little more room to swim that way and it eliminates one corner.
